Geoffrey W. Atkins

20th January 1927 - 6th November 2021

Geoffrey, former world rackets champion, died peacefully on 6th November aged 94. He is survived by his twin brother Robert, son Nick, daughter Lucinda, and seven grandchildren.

Geoffrey is widely regarded as one of the greatest rackets players, having held the world rackets championship title for an extraordinary 18 years (1954-1972), before retiring undefeated. He was also an excellent squash player, representing England twice, and won the British amateur real tennis championship three times. Known for his exceptional footwork and eye for the ball, Geoffrey was also a true athlete rarely coming off court with hair out of place or bead of sweat on his face. A good piece on his sporting achievements can be seen on the T&RA website: https://www.tennisandrackets.com/news/farewell-to-geoffrey-atkins-rackets-world-champion-1954-1971

He was born in Poona, India, educated in Rugby and Cambridge, and served in the Grenadier Guards. Geoffrey worked in the energy industry and lived in Chicago and London before retiring to Hayling Island 30 years ago. He continued to play tennis and golf until having a knee replacement, he enjoyed sunbathing and travel and loved animals. He was a devoted father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
