John Douglas Cumming
1934-2023

John Douglas Cumming (1954) of North Ferriby, East Yorkshire died on 7th July 2023 after a brief illness. John was educated at Ghyll Royd School, Ilkley and Harrow School. John completed his National Service before coming up to Queens’ to read Economics in 1954 and was at the College at the same time as his younger brother, Richard. John was a successful oarsman, winning an Oar and both were keen golfers.
After completing his studies John had a long career in Hull, firstly with Sissons Paints and later with Comet. He took early retirement in the late 1980s following the acquisition of Comet by Woolworth Holdings and was subsequently Chairman of Trustees of Dove House Hospice, Hull.
He met Jill (nee McCombe) at a mutual friend’s wedding and they were married in 1962. She survives him with their three children, 5 grand-children and one great-grand-daughter. He remained a keen golfer and cyclist and retained a deep affection for the sea and sailing. He had an extensive range of interests in the East Riding of Yorkshire and will be immensely missed by both his family and his wide circle of friends.
