The James Diggle Fund in Classics Celebratory Dinner

Old Hall was the scene for a dinner celebrating the establishment of The James Diggle Fund in Classics on 17 January 2020.

39 donors to the fund attended the celebratory dinner, with Professor Diggle in attendance as the guest of honour. The President, Professor Diggle and the Praelector, Dr Butterfield, all gave speeches, after which the floor was opened to offer donors the chance to say a few words about Professor Diggle, expressing their thanks and sharing memories and anecdotes. The dinner was also attended by John Kwon (2017), the first recipient of The James Diggle Prize and current President of the Queens’ Classical Society.

There were a total of 62 donors to the Fund, raising more than £100,000 to endow a Fund and a Prize to support Classics at Queens’ in perpetuity. A further £3,500 was raised to establish The James Diggle Prize in Classics, an annual prize of £150 for the top performance or distinction in Greek or Latin Composition or Textual Criticism, and an additional gift of £15,000 has been pledged to endow the Queens’ Classical Society.
