The John Baldwin Fellowship in Physics

Professor John Baldwin FRS (1949, Former Fellow) read Natural Sciences at Queens'. He passed away at the age of 79 in December 2010, and The John Baldwin Fellowship in Physics was established in his memory.

John's association with Queens' spanned over 60 years, during which time he made many contributions to the life and work of the College. He specialised in radio astronomy and spectral interferometry, making low-frequency maps of the sky and disentangling from these the radio structure of our galaxy. He was elected to a Research Fellowship at Queens', and became an Official Fellow and Assistant Director of Studies in Natural Sciences (Physics). He held a range of roles both nationally and internationally, including Head of the Radio Astronomy Group, Deputy Head of the Cavendish Laboratory, being elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1991.

The John Baldwin Fellow is Professor Eugene Terentjev. Eugene studied in Moscow, obtaining an MSc in 1982 and PhD in 1985; he then carried out postdoctoral research in Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio). After moving to Cambridge in 1992, he became a University Lecturer in 1998 and then Professor of Polymer Physics in 2005. His research projects focus on a broad area of soft condensed matter and biological physics.
