The YMD Society
The YMD Society was newly established in 2023. It is open to all students, and aims to promote inter-cultural exchange.
The Society will hold culturally themed events to promote mutual understanding of history, language, literature, politics and economics.
Past YMD Society Events
YMD Dinner
23rd October, Munro Room
Our inaugural YMD Dinner introduced various engaging discussions, inspired by Professor Andrew Marsham's speech, "A Long View on Global Cultural Exchange: Early Islam between Christendom and China". The evening began with a drinks reception in the Old Senior Combination Room, followed by Professor Marsham's speech in Munro Room. Afterward, guests enjoyed a three-course dinner, which concluded with a cheese board.
Lunar New Year Celebration
15th February, Old Hall
A special Lunar New Year event featured live musical performances from Cambridge University Chinese Orchestra, including traditional pieces played on the dizi, erhu and guzheng. Students enjoyed drinks and canapés, and were each given a customary red envelope. Professor Andrew Marsham (Director of Studies, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies) and Mr Rowan Kitt (Development Director) attended.
Inaugural Drinks Event
6th November, Old Hall
The YMD Society's inaugural drinks event with light food and refreshments. This event was joint organised by Guanting Di and the Alumni Office. The President, Dr Mohamed El-Erian, attended and spoke at the event. Queens' Fellows Professor Andrew Marsham (Director of Studies, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies) and Mr Rowan Kitt (Development Director) also attended.
In his speech, the President thanked Dr Adeline Mah, whose thoughtful philanthropy made the YMD Society possible. He spoke about the society's aim to be a multidisciplinary initiative that will enhance cultural exchange and understanding in the Queens' community during a time in which the wider world is experiencing conflict and fragmentation. He went on to explain that the YMD Society is part of efforts to support peace, tolerance and empathy, and to find strength in cultural diversity - promoting dialogue, open-mindedness and collaboration.
